Pawrodies of Art Created by Women Artists
Each of these cat paintings are a playful parody of a notable work by a female artist. These outstanding women are important to my artistic identity, especially Alice Neel who fuels my passion for loose figure paintings. These are some of the artists that paved the way for women to confidently express themselves in the art world.
Hilma af Cat is inspired by They Tens Mainstay IV and The Ten Largest, No. 7, Adulthood, Group IV by Hilma af klint. Despite being largely overlooked until recently, she was one of the pioneers of abstract painting. She created her vast body of work in the early 20th century.
Frida Gato is a light hearted parody of Frida Kahlo's Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. “Gato” is the Spanish word for cat; a pun that pays homage to Frida's Mexican heritage. She is known for her surreal and captivating self portraits.
Alice Neel- A self Pawtrait pays homage to an unconventional self portrait by Alice Neel. Neel was never afraid to fully embrace and create her own style. She worked hard to promote social justice throughout her life. Her portraits of everyone from artists to trade unionists are honest, gripping and expressive.
Georgia O’Kitty places a close up portrait of a cat where a white blossom would be in Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No 1. O’Keefe gained renown for her close up abstractions of flowers and paintings of southwest landscapes. She is an American Modernist.
Meowoi Kusama reimagines A Dream I Dreamed by Yayoi Kusama as an installation made by a cat. Paw prints replace some of the iconic polka dots that she is known for. Kusma is considered one of the most important contemporary Japanese artists because of her sculpture and installations.
